What is a heart language anyway?

As Wycliffe missionaries, sometimes we say things like, "Everyone should be able to read the Bible in their heart language (or mother tongue)." That's true, but what is a heart language / mother tongue? A heart language is the language that a person learns from birth and speaks in their home while growing up. It is the language that they think in, and understand best. The language that speaks to their heart.

For our family, and likely for most of you who are reading this, our heart language is English. Thankfully for us, we have a huge wealth of Bible versions available in our heart language. But, for hundreds of millions of people in the world (from nearly 1900 languages), not even a single verse of God's Word is available in their heart language!

We are excited to be a part of helping the Titan people of Manus Island in Papua New Guinea to translate the Word of God into their own language. You can join us in this work by partnering with us in our Wycliffe ministry in prayer and finances.
